A FORMER Wisbech Grammar School student has come within a whisker of winning gold in the inaugural UK School Games.

We featured Sam Coe, 16, two weeks ago following his selection for the Leicester Tigers under-17 academy rugby team.

However, Sam is also a promising hammer thrower and at the first UK School Games, held in Glasgow, he produced a great effort to win a silver medal.

A throw of 63.32m in the first round put Sam in the lead and he held first place until the penultimate round when Scotland's Chris Bennett threw 65.44m to win the gold.

Sam, whose personal best is 64.81m, said: "I am a little disappointed to lose out on the gold medal but I am pleased that I was selected and had the chance to compete against the best young athletes in the country."

Sam studies at Sedbergh School, in Cumbria, and was selected for the North West athletics team.
