The 21-year-old faced the Plymouth fighter on the undercard of Kell Brook’s successful IBF world welterweight defence, and showed why he is regarded as one of the finest young lightweights in the country after sending Adaway crashing to the canvas in the second round after a flurry of accurate punches.

Adaway, 22, recovered from the early knockdown and frustrated Gill in the remaining four rounds, but Gill’s quality showed and the man from Chatteris bagged a 58-55 points win.

Despite extending his winning record, Gill wasn’t pleased with his performance at the Sheffield Arena.

He said: “I didn’t feel myself in the ring but I’m trying to take positives from the fight. It wasn’t the best performance, but I’ll keep improving.

“You haven’t seen the best of Jordan Gill yet.”

Hundreds of Gill’s faithful supporters travelled to Sheffield to watch Gill take on Adaway, and the fighter was grateful for the backing he received.

“The support was brilliant,” he said. “Hundreds of people came to the fight and I couldn’t have wished for better support. It was unreal.”

Gill is now spending a week back in his hometown of Chatteris, before resuming training ahead of a potential 17th fight in the coming months.

“I’m having a relaxing week at home with my family, but then I’ll be straight back into it with a view of having my next fight in April or May,” said Gill.
