CARETAKER boss Julian Young says he cannot take up the vacant Chatteris Town job - despite being “sorely tempted”.

The 47-year-old has steered the Lilies to Kershaw Premier Division safety following the departure of former boss Steve Taylor in February.

But Young said he is unable to become manager next season due to personal and work commitments.

He said: “I took the job on when the club was in a bit of a pickle and I did say to the committee that I would do it until the end of the season.

“I’m sorely tempted to keep it up because, let’s be honest, we’ve had a bit of success. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed it but I just can’t at this stage in my life.

“I have never been officially asked if I would do it but committee members and some of the players have said it would be nice if I’d consider it.

“The club is in my heart - I have been here for 20 years - and it’s a job that I might be able to do at some point.

“But at this precise moment it’s not the right time for me.”

The Lilies’ revival hit new heights at West Street on Saturday as goals from Jack Saunders and Tony Brown helped them beat fifth-placed Fulbourn Institute 2-1.

Young said: “We’ve proven in the last 10 games that we’re not a bottom side and we won’t stop there. I want six more points from our last two games.”

Young also manages the club’s under-16s, and he plans to take further roles with the under-18s and the A-team.

He said: “I want to help the transition between the youth clubs and Chatteris Town and get them working a bit better for the future of the club.”

The Lilies host rivals Somersham Town on Saturday.
