FENLAND drivers maintained their challenge in the 750 Motor Club Stock Hatch season with some good results in the double-header at Lydden Hill last week.
Reigning Class A champion Maurice Hayden, from Wisbech, boosted his charge for the title with 56 useful points after finishing third and first in the weekend's two finals.
Hayden, driving a Citroen Saxo VTR, posted the second best qualifying lap time of 51.44 on Saturday, only 0.3s behind Pete Morgan.
Fellow Wisbech racer Terry Roughton, lapped in 51.63 to claim fourth on the grid while Gareth Wright was 14th in 52.09.
Class B racer, Steve Mitchell, in his Citroen AX GTi, lapped in 55.34 but was unable to start Saturday's heat.
In Saturday's Class A final, Hayden was passed by the fast-starting Matt Rozier on the first lap but held on to third place and crossed the line just 0.93s behind winner and pole-sitter Pete Morgan.
Roughton stayed fourth throughout the race and Wright moved up to fifth on the first lap and held position to take the chequered flag.
Mitchell moved up a place in the first lap of Sunday's Class B heat and finished 21st to claim two championship points.
Hayden ended the weekend on a high thanks to a fine drive in Sunday's final. He leap-frogged Morgan on the opening lap and resisted his challenge to win the race by 2.83s and set the fastest lap.
Roughton produced another consistent display to finish fifth but Wright, after storming from 14th on the grid to 10th, was unfortunate to drop down to finish 18th.
- THERE were also some good performances from Fenland drivers in Tiger Racing's second race of the season at Snetterton last week.
Tiger Racing, based at Thorney Toll, fielded eight of the 17 cars taking part in a race organised in conjunction with the Royal Air Force Motorsports Association (RAFMSA).
Among the racers were Wisbech's Steve Quenby, Thorney's Paul Dudley and Jack Walton, from Long Sutton.
Qualifying proved to be spectacular when the engine of Gareth Cordey's Tiger R6 blew and forced the session to be red-flagged.
Dudley's Duratec-powered R6 was the second fastest qualifier while Quenby lapped seventh fastest in his R6. In the sealed-engine class, Walton qualified 11th in his Tiger Avon.
A false start from pole-sitter Ken Culverwell forced a re-start and it was Dudley and Mark Steward who catapulted their cars to the front and replayed the battle they had acted out in the first race at Brands Hatch.
Dudley just about kept Steward behind him to the chequered flag, winning by 0.563s, and Ian Fletcher was third in the motorbike-engined Hornet Mk4.
In the sealed-engine class, Walton got off to a great start and led the rest of the field in his Zetec-powered Tiger Avon followed by Chris Brookes in his R6.
