STEVE Bright says it will be ‘devastating’ if Chatteris Town go down at the end of the season, but a look at the bottom end of the Cambs League Premier table highlights the massive task the Lilies have on their hands to stay up.

On Saturday, Chatteris lost 2-1 at home to Wisbech St Mary with the visitors scoring their winner 20 seconds from time – and the joint manager described that bitter blow as “deflating”.

“We have got to give it 110 per cent until the end of the season and hope and pray that we get away with it,” he said.

“I would be lying if I said it was going to be easy to avoid relegation but we have picked up in the last couple of weeks and on Saturday we were really unlucky.”

Ben Matthews gave the Lilies a great start when his 20th minute shot deflected over the top of the visiting goalkeeper and into the net.

After that they dominated the first half but were denied on numerous occasions with the Wisbech goalkeeper making some great saves. In the second half Alex Ashley’s shot was parried by the goalkeeper and the ball got stuck in mud as it rolled towards the line.

Wisbech got their equaliser soon after and with just seconds remaining they broke through again to win all three points.

Bright, who has stepped down as chairman this season, manages the team with Leigh Matthews. He said: “We will be devastated if we go down but we will deal with that if it happens.

“Eaton Socon have a lot of games to play in a short space of time. That will be tough for them so we just have to pick up points from our final six.

“Ely City Reserves are in it as well but they have fewer games in hand.”

On Saturday, Chatteris are at home to Sawston United – but they will also be keeping an eye on what happens at River Road where Eaton Socon take on Linton Granta. Eaton, who lost 1-0 at Littleport Town on Tuesday night, have played a staggering nine games less than Chatteris, but are only four points behind.
