THE cold weather certainly isn't going to help the sport on the lakes now the river season has ended.

Shaun Strachan rounded-off the season with a victory when he landed 35lb of perch, tench and rudd above the bypass bridge, on the Old Nene. Sitting next to Shaun was Pete Chilton, fishing for tench, and he hooked 15.

Over on the Twenty Foot, there was plenty of pike and tench being caught on the final day of the season. Dave Houghton, of March, fished all day and found roach to 12oz feeding well on the feeder.

Roll on June 16! Let me know if you are fishing the lakes and don't forget that your rod licence expires at the end of the month.

The Mill View Angling Club were on Elm Lake, at Decoy, last Sunday and it fished well considering the windy weather broke three poles and blew two sections of Martin Kirk's pole into the lake.

Des Proud came out on top with 66lb from a corner peg and in the opposite corner, Kev Medlock finished second with 37lb.

The top junior was Kieran Owen, who hooked 29lb, beating his dad Alan by 10lb.

This weekend, Mill View are back at Decoy, this time on the Yew Lake. The draw is at 8.30am and fishing runs from 10am-4pm. Anyone wishing to take part should contact Pete at the shop.

The Whitemoor Prison Angling Club fished a match on Kingfisher Lake, near Parson Drove, last week and Steve Smalley won it with 31lb.

The 'last chance' trophy went to third place Ray Smith, who hadn't won a trophy match all season.

The Silver Fish Lake, at Kingsland Reservoir, was a popular venue last weekend but the cold weather put paid to any really big catches.

There were some rudd to be caught but the bream and tench didn't feed at all. The two carp lakes were also slow but they will improve with warmer weather.

Cross Drove Fishery, near Brandon, is returning some good sport and both of the weekend's matches fished well.

Dave Page won on Saturday with 46lb and, on Sunday, Wisbech's Dave Pearce junior hooked 66lb but had to settle for second place behind Pete Goldstraw, from Watling, who landed 72lb. Chopped worm and caster works well here in the cold weather but as it gets warmer, pellet or corn will be more suitable.

If you want to fish the venue call 01842 828102 for more information.

You don't have to travel far for a day's fishing and there are good venues at Whittlesey.

The Railway lakes are near the station and you will find the East Delph lakes on the same road as the Dog and Doublet pub.

Decoy Lakes, Eldenell Lakes, Kingsland Reservoir, Patrick's, Willowcroft Lakes and Fields End Water are just a few venues in the area you can fish on a day ticket and I will be reporting on most of them.

Finally, the March and District Club will be holding a committee meeting at the Station Hotel, March, on Tuesday from 8pm.
