Joint-boss Paul Cousins has urged his side to show more belief after Wisbech Town lost 2-0 to high-flying Spalding United on Tuesday.
The Fenmen went in to the game on the back of a 3-1 win over Newport Pagnell Town at the Elgood’s Fenland Stadium on Saturday.
But they could not prevent Spalding United from making it seven wins from seven in this season’s United Counties League.
A string of good saves from Lea Jordan and some wasteful finishing meant the Fenmen went in to the break all square but Lewis Webb broke the deadlock in the 47th minute and substitute Mark Jones scored a spectacular second in injury time.
Cousins said: “I can’t argue with the performance. The work-rate was second to none.
“But I got the sense when we went 1-0 down the lads seemed to accept the loss because we were playing away from home against a good side.
“In fact, had they shown more belief we could have got something out of the game.”
Jack Friend grabbed the pick of the goals in Wisbech’s win over Newport Pagnell Town.
With 82 minutes on the clock and Wisbech leading 2-1, 16-year-old Friend volleyed Callum Reed’s diagonal pass over Newport keeper Josh McAdoo into the top right hand corner.
Midfielder Steven Reid and striker Tom James also found the net.
Wisbech have been busy in the transfer market as they look to bolster their attacking options.
Striker Gary Gibbs, 27, arrived from Peterborough Sports at the beginning of the week and made his debut against Spalding.
Jack Smith, 21, another striker, has joined from Boston Town.
King’s Lynn Town defender Ryan Fryatt was drafted into the Wisbech team for the Spalding defeat but he has returned to the Linnets.
Cousins said: “King’s Lynn manager Gary Setchell agreed to loan us Ryan (Fryatt) for one game because of Jon Fairweather’s injury.
“Gary (Gibbs) is a big, strong lad. It would be unfair to judge him on the Spalding game. It should be easier for him tomorrow.
“Jack (Smith) is another big, powerful lad, which is the type of player we need in this more physical league.
“The side needs more from its strikers. I felt the Spalding strikers were the difference between the two sides because they never gave our defence a moment’s rest.”
Wisbech host Northampton Chenecks in the UCL Knockout Cup tomorrow.
