MILLIONS watched darts legend Martin ‘Wolfie’ Adams win his third world championship on Sunday - but this weekend he will grace a much humbler oche.

The England captain will return to action at March United Services Club - where he will help Cambridgeshire take on Glamorgan in a Premier League fixture.

It is the second successive year that Wolfie will play in March the week after winning the BDO World Championship - last year, after winning the world championship for a second time, he also brought the trophy to the Services.

And the 54-year-old, who has also won a hat-trick of World Masters titles, is as passionate as ever about playing in village and county leagues.

“Darts is what I do,” said Adams. “It’s my job and I love it. I go from one stage to another and I just keep doing what I have always done. That’s my motto.

“I have been playing county darts for years and I will continue to do so. That leads to the international teams - you have to play your county games to play for your country.

“The structure of our sport is different to many others. Professional footballers don’t go out and play in the Sunday league because of injury risks, whereas in darts you continue to support those other levels.”

Cambridgeshire’s squad of 12 players will meet their rivals from Glamorgan in this weekend’s fixture, which will start with the B team’s games from noon tomorrow. The A team take to the oche at 11am on Sunday and admission is 4.

Darts fans across the country tuned in to watch Wolfie bag his BDO hat-trick by beating Dean Winstanley 7-5 in just over two hours on Sunday.

“I came back to earth Tuesday morning when I had to go and do the shopping,” said Adams, who lives in Market Deeping.

“It’s all about keeping involved with the sport and that starts at games like this. I have always believed that we work together as a sport.

“Every county has a host of volunteers and officials. None of them are paid - they do it for the love of the sport. And it’s the same for me, it’s nice to come back after all that pressure.”

Wolfie is the most capped international captain in the history of the game.
