Derbies are never one-sided affairs’

THE Wisbech first team were also in local derby action on Saturday when they played out a 10-0 home victory over West Norfolk.

Two unconverted first half tries from former West Norfolk outside centre Mark Laffeaty-Johns and 18-year-old full back Joe Barfoot gave Wisbech an encouraging victory ahead of the start of a new league campaign.

Skipper Luke Feaviour said: "I was very pleased with the result considering that derbies are never one-sided affairs.

"I can take many positives from the game and I was particularly pleased with our solid defence and the positive aggression we showed in all areas of the pitch."

Wisbech have added several new players to their squad and as well as Mark Laffeaty-Johns, second row Ben Rogers has also made the move from West Norfolk.

Moving up from the junior ranks are Joe Barfoot and flanker James Pettit. Phil and Tom Martell, centre and flanker respectively, have also joined the team.

Luke Feaviour said: "We are aiming to clinch promotion to London North East Division Three this season.

"We will be competing in the new Powergen Senior Vase, having moved up form the Junior Vase, and so we will be going up against teams from a higher level.

- HONOURS were shared in Saturday's friendly match between the Wisbech and March Rugby Clubs' second teams.

As expected, the Fenland derby proved to be hugely competitive and tempers often flared but in the end both teams had to be content with the 7-7 final score.

Hard hits came in from both defences, who stood firm and thwarted the majority of attacks.

However, it was March who drew first blood when the Bears' pack produced quick ball to the backs and Simon Altoff crossed the line to score his first try for the club. Matt Day's conversion gave March a 7-0 lead at the break.

It was more of the same in the second half and Wisbech looked like they may regret missing penalty kicks but with time running out, the home side produced one final surge from their forwards and scored a converted try.
