BOXING sensation Jordan Gill will have to wait for his second professional bout after this month’s Peterborough show was cancelled following shootings at a nearby travellers’ site.

The event, which was scheduled for September 29 at Peterborough Arena, has been called off as a precaution after the shooting of three men at the travellers’ site in Oxney Road.

But Chatteris star Gill has been handed a dream replacement show on which to make his second appearance as a professional boxer.

The 18-year-old will fight at Bluewater, in Kent, on October 13, on the same bill as Olympic gold medallist James DeGale, rising star Kid Galahad and Chris Eubank Junior.

Gill, who had sold hundreds of tickets for this month’s show to his army of fans from the Fens, said he was “mortified” that it had been cancelled.

But he said all those who had bought tickets could exchange them for tickets to see him next month - on a much bigger bill which will be televised on Channel 5.

“I couldn’t believe it was cancelled,” said Gill. “I was panicking because so many people have bought tickets.

“But that’s one of the perks of having the best manager in the country (John Ingle) - he can get you on massive shows to make up for it.

“I’m really happy to get on a show like that. It will be a big build up and there’s bound to be a weigh-in in front of the cameras.

“I will make sure I train hard and I’ll be ready to destroy somebody on October 13.”

A joint statement from Peterborough Arena and boxing promoter Robert Waterman said: “It is with regret that we have postponed this event – both for the professional fighters and the fans.

“However, boxing is a combat sport and in light of the unfortunate incidents in Peterborough earlier this week, it would be insensitive and inappropriate to stage this event at this time.

“It is regrettable that this decision has been taken but it in no way reflects on the boxers themselves.”

Gill has just returned from a two-week altitude camp in Fuerteventura, where he was training alongside fellow stars from the Dominic Ingle gym such as Kell Brook.

The teenager made his debut on Brook’s undercard in July, when he outclassed journeyman Kristian Laight 40-36 on points in Sheffield.

Paul Gill, his father, said: “I don’t think there’s any other boxer in the country that will have had their first two bouts on shows as big as these.”

• Tickets for the bout on October 13 are priced at 30. Tickets bought from Gill for this month’s show can be exchanged or refunded. To buy or exchange tickets contact the Gills on 01354 695211.
