MARCH Town United got back to winning ways on Saturday, but they still remain bottom of Ridgeons Division One.The Hares' 2-0 home win against Hadleigh United proved to be a comfortable victory, and March's performance belied their league position. The home side began brightly and they linked up well without really forging a clear goalscoring opportunity. However Martin Wells, who looked a threat up front all game, forced the Hadleigh keeper into a save after 12 minutes. The March defence of Rory Wheeler, Marc Welcher, Billy Tumblety, and Ashley Spendelow looked a solid unit, and the only real scare of the first half came three minutes before the break, when a long ball ended up at the feet of a Hadleigh striker but his shot cleared Lee Smith's bar.The home side broke the deadlock three minutes into the second half, when Wells picked up the ball in the Hadleigh area and showed a cool head to steady himself and fire the ball in to the net.March continued to look the better side and Ryan Francis went close to doubling the Hares' lead midway through the half, when he picked up Ashley Brand's lay-off, but his shot hit the bottom of the post. However, March scored a deserved second goal five minutes later. A long free kick found Lawrie Brand on the right and he produced a fine finish to find the back of the net.In the dying minutes, A Hadleigh player was sent off and Adam Collins received a second yellow card for retaliation.March manager Paul Swannell said: "I was pleased with our performance and it was good to see us take our chances."I thought it was a good, solid team performance. Our back four were excellent and Adam Collins was impressive in midfield." March now have two away games in three days. The tricky trip to fourth-placed Fulbourn Institute tomorrow (Saturday) is followed by Monday's match at Long Melford.March will be without Harry Roe and Lee Smith for tomorrow's match. Nick Liversidge will deputise for Smith in goal.
