March Town are officially up and running as they earned their first victory of the 2018-19 season last Saturday.
The Hares came out 2-1 winners over Leiston Reserves in the Thurlow Nunn League, First Division North, thanks to second-half goals from Adam Rothery and Rob Conyard.
Despite a goalless first period, March produced two quickfire strikes in seven minutes to give manager Brett Whaley his first win of the campaign, having seen his side endure a late onslaught.
Speaking after the game, Whaley said: “I thought we weren’t particularly good in the first half.
“What we said to them at half-time was to get higher up the pitch, put their back-three under a bit more pressure.
“Second half, we started really well and for 25 minutes, it was the best we’ve played.
“We’ve played well in the first three games, but we haven’t had a win, and the last 20 minutes we got nervous.
“We stopped doing the things we did well, we sat a little bit deep, and suddenly we invited some pressure on us.
“But we said we need to get that first win; that takes a little bit of pressure off us because at 2-1, we were dominating the game and should have gone on and got the next goal.
“We feel we’ve got players that can open sides up, so it got us closer to each other and it showed, and that ultimately won us the game.”
Whaley is not pondering on the performance, though, and seeks further improvement on his side’s good form.
“We feel that we’ve got better defensively each game and that comes from playing together and the formation.
“The front-three have always got goals in them and we looked like scoring when we went forward.
“When they play together, they look really dangerous.
“We’re three unbeaten now; that needs to go to four, five, six games, that’s the key for us.”
March take a break from league action when they travel to Bourne for an FA Vase tie on Saturday, before hosting Harleston Town next weekend.
