Emma Searle scored again, making it 16 in 17 games, but March Town Ladies lost 3-1 to S Tech League champions Newmarket Town Ladies yesterday.

The Hares almost took the lead early when Charley Miller went close. Two quick breaks put Newmarket two up by the 15 minute mark. The Hares clawed themselves back into the game when a long Anna Hatcher free kick was half volleyed in by Searle.

Carly Oakley had a goal disallowed as the Hares piled on the pressure, but Newmarket sealed the win with a rare second half shot.

The game was marred by a two team brawl five minutes from time, which the referee expertly defused.

On Saturday, the Hares reached the semi final of the Isleham five a side Football Tournament, narrowly losing 1-0 to Fulbourn Institute in extra time.

The Hares have one game remaining this season, at Sawtry Ladies on Saturday.

Manager Gary Davis says he is satisfied with the team’s progress this season.

He said: ‘We’ve managed to have an impressive run since just before Christmas, losing narrowly to a Senior Division Team (Cambridge Womens) in a cup semi final and also winning the Cambs FA Flexi League.

“The team have also been in the Ladies FA Cup this season and were winning 1-0 until a serious player injury stopped the game for an hour.

“In our first season I was trying to settle players into positions, many of whom hadn’t played for five or more years but these players have now come on leaps and bounds.

“Jade Pointer and Anna Hatcher are some of the strongest midfield players in our league and Hannah Johnson has had an awesome season at the back.

“Our youngsters, who made the jump up from youth football, Dani Westgate, Megan Rooney and Sydney Davis, have all excelled.

“Another of the youngsters, Emma Searle, has been converted from a centre back to joint top scorer in Cambridgeshire, but I shouldn’t single players out, as the whole squad have developed this year.

“With the ground improvements at the GER, the backing of the March Town Committee and another entry into the Ladies FA Cup planned for next season, things are looking rosy for the squad.”
