Mel Mattless doesn't do bold statements and grand plans.

So, after confirming he will continue as manager of March Town for next season, it was no surprise when he shared a relatively modest and achievable goal.

The 58-year-old, who stepped in along with right-hand man Roy Brand following the October sacking of Chris Bartlett, has overseen a gradual improvement in results.

That has been achieved while introducing a host of young and locally-based players into the first-team fold.

“Everyone at the club made it very clear they wanted us to stay,” said Mattless. “There are some terrific people behind the scenes at March.

“That is what persuaded me to step in the first place and it has also been a big factor in agreeing to carry on.

“Initially we spoke about a three-year plan, but a lot can happen in that length of time in and it is a big commitment for someone of my age.

“We’ve agreed to keep it as a rolling thing with myself and Roy in charge next season. We’ll sit down again this time next year and have another look at where we are.

“It has been a big challenge and it has been good to see things fall into place. I must admit losing heavily in the first four games made me wonder what I had let myself in for.

“My son, Max, warned me it would be a tough job as several players would depart following the change of management, but that has allowed to bring through a number of local lads which will benefit the club in the long-term.

“We have a group of players who are here for enjoyment, not money, and we are making progress.

“Our intention this season is finish as high as we possibly can before aiming to improve on that next year.

“The club would love to play in the FA Cup again and we need to finish in the top 10 to make that happen. We’ll give it a good go.”
