WISBECH Cricket Club's first team were celebrating after picking up two wins at the weekend.

An excellent knock of 58 from Gary Freear proved to be the difference against Granta in the Tucker Division One match on Saturday.

Freear formed a second wicket partnership of 92 with James Staveley (30) before James Williams (20) and Daniel Mason (18) helped Wisbech to a total of 172.

Granta never really looked like threatening the Wisbech total, largely thanks to fine bowling from Dominic Stannard (3-10), Craig Johnson (3-11) and Williams (2-28).

The visitors were eventually dismissed for 115 and Wisbech picked up 25 points.

It was much closer in Sunday's Rutland Division Two match against Ufford Park.

Again, Gary Freear was the top batsman as he scored 78 but he was ably supported by Sam Albutt (60), Simon Freear (40) and James Williams (33) as Wisbech scored 227.

The Ufford Park middle order proved to be very difficult to shift but Craig Johnson (3-53), Dominic Stannard (2-37) and Williams (2-38) just did enough to restrict Ufford Park to 220.

Wisbech II picked up a valuable win against Dean in Hunts Division Two on Saturday.

Sam Albutt (48) and Keith Jakings (21) made an early impression before tail-ender Paul Strickle scored a valuable 26 from just 28 balls and helped Wisbech to a total of 170-7.

Dean never got close to their target as father and son, Paul and John Strickle recorded figures of 3-36 and 2-13 respectively to complement Lee Peck's 2-26 and Orlando Prestidge's 2-27. The home side eventually succumbed at 110.

The news was not so good for Wisbech II in Sunday's Fenland League match, when they lost by four wickets at Somersham.

John Mallett (30), Martin Parrin (18) and Adam Thomas (16) top scored as Wisbech were bowled out for 117.

John Strickle led the bowling attack with 2-30 but Somersham reached their target after 41.4 overs.

In the West Norfolk League Division Four on Sunday, Wisbech III lost their match at Bircham, after a poor display in the field.

Misfielding probably cost 20 runs as the home side reached 157-6 and it proved costly when Wisbech were bowled out 10 runs short of their target, despite the best efforts of Jason Smith (58).

* WISBECH Cricket Club will be hosting Sunday's Minor Counties match between Cambridgeshire and Wiltshire. The game, at Harecroft Road, starts at 11am.

* LEVERINGTON found last season's champions, Ely and Haddenham, simply too strong for them in Sunday's Fenland Trophy match.

Ely batted first and scored an impressive 239. Mark Godfrey picked up two wickets and Paul Thompson, Damien Allen, Clive Bilcliff and Ali Nula claimed a wicket a piece.

Leverington struggled in the early stages of their reply. Damien Allen (25 not out) and brother James (39) put on 63 for the seventh wicket before they were dismissed and the team were bowled out for 126.

WISBECH WONDERS: James Staveley formed a second wicket partnership of 92 with Gary Freear which put Wisbech in control against Granta on Saturday.
