Chatteris fighter Jordan Gill burst into the big-time tonight – by passing the toughest test of his career.
Gill extended his perfect record to 19 fights with a unanimous points victory over Jason Cunningham in a British featherweight title eliminator.
The 23 year-old delivered a dominant display in front of the Sky Sports cameras at the Victoria Warehouse in Manchester, flooring his older and more experienced opponent in the fourth and seventh rounds.
Two-time Commonwealth champion Cunningham launched a ferocious late rally in the final round in a bid to force a stoppage, but Gill stood strong and continued to land some tasty shots of his own.
Gill suffered damage around his left eye in the opening round and that worsened during the thrilling finale when the two men traded a succession of blows, but he negotiated a sharp rise in class in fine style.
Gill’s trainer Dave Coldwell said: “I know it was squeaky bum time in the last round, but Jordan has stepped up against a tough fighter.
“Jordan switched off, got tired and made a few mistakes in the final round, but I can easily forgive him for that and he’ll definitely learn from it.
“Jordan is one of the most dedicated kids you’ll ever meet and he has the discipline to go with it. He can also fight and he showed everyone that tonight.”
The British title is currently held by Norfolk fighter Ryan Walsh while Gill could also be a contender for the Commonwealth crown which belongs to Reece Bellotti.
