WISBECH Town boss Steve Appleby blamed a bit “too much Christmas cheer” for his side’s dour display in a 0-0 draw with Godmanchester Rovers today.

A frustrating Boxing Day for the Fenmen got worse when Chris Bacon was sent off for kicking out at an opponent in the second half. The dismissal means the talismanic striker will be suspended for their FA Vase fourth-round trip to Gornal Athletic on January 19.

More than 200 fans watched the bore draw after the muddy Elgood’s Fenland Stadium pitch was passed fit in an early-morning pitch inspection.

Appleby said: “It was a poor game. Perhaps it was too much Christmas cheer - an early kick-off, food and beer. Both teams looked sluggish.”

Wisbech, who sit fifth in the Thurlow Nunn Premier Division, will host Felixstowe & Walton United on Saturday - if the pitch recovers from today’s fixture. They travel to Ely City on January 2.
