March Town United manager Paul Blanchflower praised his side after they pushed high flying Ipswich Wanderers all the way on Saturday.

Cheered on by a bumper crowd of 160 who enjoyed free entry to the GER, the Hares had the bulk of the chances but two freak goals saw them lose 2-1 to a team 12 places above them (5th place) in the Thurlow Nunn First Division.

Sean White scored March’s first goal in five games from the penalty spot but they could not force an equaliser.

Blanchflower said: “It was a very good performance. The Ipswich keeper made three full length saves before their first goal, which bobbled over our goalkeeper’s foot.

“For their second goal their player slipped when taking a free kick and it went nowhere near where he was aiming but two of our players collided and it went in.

“We went straight back down the other end and won a penalty and pulled one back.

“In the second half we put in a valiant effort and you could tell by their reaction when the final whistle blew they had been in the game.”

Balanchflower says, if his side can stop making silly mistakes, a change in fortunes is around the corner.

“I asked the players for two things - to give me the same amount of effort as they did the week before and score a goal, and they did both.

“We’ve got to keep going. We’ve put out the same side for the last few games and they are starting to gel.

“We have proven we can compete in this league. We just need to keep on putting in similar performances and eradicate the errors.”

March will be missing midfielder Jonathon Gibbons when they travel to Saffron Walden Town on Saturday.
