CAPTAIN David Wadsley has insisted that his side are promotion contenders after Wisbech matched their biggest victory of the last decade.

The first team ran riot at Harecroft Road on Saturday, crushing basement boys East London 97-0 to go fourth in London North-East Division Three.

Former skipper Tom Long, who deputised for suspended winger Shane Vickers, scored four of the team’s 15 tries to equal his most emphatic win in a Wisbech shirt.

“We just didn’t take our foot off the gas,” said Long.

“That matches the highest score I’ve been involved in for the club, which was when we beat Ipswich YM 97-0 about nine years ago.”

Will Pettit (3), Jack Hoyles (2), Sam Anderson (2), Mark Laws, Jack Smith, Nat Humphreys and Wadsley all scored tries in the rout.

Laws also kicked 11 conversions in what was the biggest victory recorded in the league this season.

Wadsley said: “I think 97-0 was a fair reflection, they just didn’t have any answers for us when we played attacking rugby.

“We’re always strong at home but I wasn’t expecting us to put 97 points on them! There won’t be too many scores like that in the league this year.”

The Wisbech skipper said his side could challenge for promotion but admitted they needed players to improve their availability for away games.

“I’ve always said that I expect nothing less than a top-three finish,” he said. “We would be letting ourselves down if we didn’t get that.

“Personally, I want to go for promotion. If we don’t quite get it this year, then next year.

“It’s not a step too far provided we make sure we’ve got a strong side when we go away.”

Wisbech continue their league campaign with a trip to Old Brentwoods tomorrow.
