March Town captain Chris Ringham hopes his side will be inspired by the challenge of travelling to high-flying Ramsey on Saturday.

Ramsey are in ominous form, having beaten Foxton/Babraham by five wickets in their last game, but Ringham says March often raise their game against the league’s strongest sides.

When the two sides met in April at The Avenue, March were bowled out for 101, which Ramsey chased down with five wickets to spare.

He said: “Ramsey is going to be tough. They are similar to Wisbech - they have so many good players you can’t underestimate anyone.

“If you focus on one player like Michael Cafferkey (who took 5-20 against March in April), someone else will step up and give a match-winning performance.

“A couple of seasons ago we often lost to the sides in the bottom half of the league and won against the sides in the top half, so hopefully we can put on a performance.

“We have a good recent record at Ramsey, so we’ll give it a go.”

March suffered a disappointing three wicket loss against Histon in the Tucker Gardner League at The Avenue on Saturday.

They were not helped by the fact two of their players, Tyler Phillips and Ben Pyle, were late to the game because of work commitments, meaning March had to bat first on a green pitch.

The hosts were in real trouble at 41-4 but Phillips (42 no) and Pyle (23 no) made amends for their tardy arrivals and got March up to 160-6.

But, despite the bowlers best efforts, Histon completed the double over March with three wickets in hand and nine balls to spare.

Ringham said: “Tyler was stuck concreting in Cambridge and Ben had car issues on Saturday morning so they got delayed.

“It would have been nice to bowl first but we were still confident we’d get 200.

“We should have applied ourselves better, Fair play to Tyler and Ben they put in a good effort under pressure to give us something to bowl at.

“Unfortunately, we didn’t get enough early wickets. You can make all the excuses you want but we didn’t play well enough to win.”

Chris Budd will be missing for Saturday’s game so club stalwart and wicket-keeper John Gilson returns to the first team.
