Both March Town’s men’s and women’s hockey teams are closing in on titles after spectacular seasons.

The men’s first team thrashed Cambridge South 7-1 on Saturday to make it 14 straight wins, while the women’s first team have already sealed promotion and all but won their league.

The men are in pole position to win East Men’s Division 3NW - four points clear of second placed City of Peterborough IV with only four games remaining.

Captain Matthew Bamford said; “I suspect other teams will drop down some of their senior players for our remaining games so we are in for some tough games but we are determined to push for the title.

“Getting relegated last season was disappointing but we are starting to build again and hopefully the players will stick around next season. We may also get some players back who left after last season.”

Despite missing talismanic Jody Betts, who has scored 36 goals this season, March were far too strong for basement side Cambridge South II, notching up their 100th goal of the season in the process.

Matty Wallis and Ryan Wright bagged braces, with Andrew Wright, Ben Wright and Adam Graham also on target.

Bamford said: “Even when Jody (Betts) has been missing we’ve still been putting away six, seven or eight goals, which shows that we are not solely reliant on him.”

The women’s first team have been even more dominant - they had won all 13 of their East Women’s Division 4NW games before being held 1-1 by Cambridge South II on Saturday.

Hannah Odlin put March ahead with a tap in but the hosts levelled in the second half.

But, despite losing their 100 per cent record, promotion has been sealed and the title is all but assured.

They are six points clear of chasers St Ives with two games remaining and have a 25 goal better goal difference.

March have the chance to seal the title when they host St Ives on March 1 at Neale-Wade Academy.

Captain Lorna Larham said: “We have been able to put out a regular team this year, instead of having only 10 or 11 to choose from and having to get players out of retirement.

“St Ives will be a tough game but hopefully we’ll beat them and seal the league.”

In Division 4NW, there was disappointment for March men’s II, who lost 3-0 to St Neots II.
