More than 130 people of all ages took part in a Whittlesey club’s first ever Triathlon on Saturday.

The event, organised by Whittlesey’s Triathlon club (WiTri), saw more than 100 children and 30 novice adults swim, bike and run at the Manor Leisure Centre.

The club was formed two years ago by like minded friends with a passion for Triathlon who wanted to encourage others to get involved in the sport.

Entrants, aged from eight to 66, travelled from all over the country to take part.

Tiya Sherliker, 9, made the journey from Preston to take part in her first Triathlon.

She chose the event to raise money for the charity Soldiers Off The Street and raised more than £1,400 by completing a 100m swim, 1,600m bike ride and 800m run.

The event has been widely praised on Facebook. One poster, Michelle Hollyoak, said: “Fantastically organised event guys. We all had a brilliant morning. Thanks.”

Another poster, Sarah Marshall, added: “Thanks for organising a brilliant day. I am so proud to have taken part and survived (after only 40 days training). Now having invested in a swimming costume and running shoes it would be a shame to waste them. Now looking for the next event.

“Thanks to the organisers and a brilliant support group (some people may have noticed the banners and heard a few cheers).”

Cameron Sylvester, chairman of WiTri, was thrilled with how the event unfolded.

He said: “Firstly a massive thank you to everyone that helped out to make today possible, with a very special mention to Jon Chamberlain and Kirk Brawn, great team work fellas.

“Our small triathlon club staged Whittlesey’s first ever triathlon and I think we did a pretty good job.

“Without everyone’s help it wouldn’t of been possible, so again a massive thank you from the bottom of my heart.

“At the moment I feel really proud - thank you.”

His wife, Megan Sylvester, added: “The main thing we’re pleased about is that a lot of children were apprehensive about the event and some didn’t take part but after watching it they said they can’t wait to do it next year and have asked for bikes for Christmas.

“The event seems to have inspired a lot of adults as well.”

WiTri has 20 members, many of whom have achieved impressive results in competitions this summer.

Cameron Silvester and Kirk Brawn completed Ironman Bolton with impressive times, placing them 20th and 29th in their age category.

Nigel Wilson 54, swam the Gibraltar Straits and Wesley Wilkinson completed a 62 mile Ultra Marathon.
