Wisbech moved out of the relegation zone with a bonus point 27-21 win over Harlow at Harecroft Road on Saturday.

The hosts scored tries through James Napier, Joe Barfoot, James Patrick and Steve Priest, while Jack Malkin kicked seven points.

Wisbech are now three points ahead of Old Brentwoods in SSE London Three North East, who occupy the final relegation spot, but they have played two games more.

They are level on points with eighth place Wanstead, who have played a game less.

Wisbech will probably have to win both their remaining games at Sudbury on April 5 and at home to Beccles the following Saturday to give themselves a realistic chance of survival.

Manager Cliff Humphreys said: “We proved that we are a formidable squad when we stick to the game plan set by coach Leonard Veenendaal.

“The lacklustre home games against Brentwood and Wanstead which we lost and the draw away to Canvey Island have cost us dear this season.

“We have a very difficult away game against Sudbury in two weeks times before the final league match at home against Beccles which could turn out to be the relegation decider.”

Against Harlow, centre Napier broke the deadlock with an excellent try, before winger Barfoot went over out wide after another good team move.

Wisbech lost their way and the visitors reduced the deficit with a try and penalty to make it 12-8 at half time.

More Wisbech indiscipline meant Harlow kicked two penalties to take a 14-12 lead early in the second half.

Malkin nudged Wisbech back in front with a penalty then winger James Patrick stormed through the defence at pace to score under the posts.

Full back Steve Priest latched on to Nathan Goodale’s pop pass and scored the bonus point try, before Harlow crossed to seal their losing bonus point.

Wisbech host Newmarket in the semi-final of the Cambs Cup on Saturday, kick off 3pm.

The seconds carried on their strong end to the season with a 36-21 win over West Norfolk III in the Woodfordes Norfolk League. They host Spalding II in a friendly on Saturday.
