SATURDAY'S Fenland derby between the March and Wisbech first teams proved to be an exciting and tense match but it was Wisbech who scraped the win.

On a damp pitch, Wisbech got off to a disastrous start with the bat, losing their first four wickets for just 17 runs but James Williams, celebrating his 21st birthday, put the home side back on track with a fine innings of 61.

Middle order stands from Simon Freear (38) and Dan Mason (15) helped to boost the Wisbech score but the March bowlers regained their form as Chris Ringham (3-14), Shardul Brahmbhatt (3-32) and Peter Hills (2-19) mopped up the tail.

With the final four Wisbech wickets falling for four runs, the home side's total of 146 all out looked in danger.

However, March also found the going tough on the damp wicket and against a ferocious spell of bowling from birthday boy Williams, who returned superb figures of 6-23.

Shardul Brahmbhatt was the only batsman to make a stand as he scored a magnificent 100 before he was trapped lbw by Gary Freear.

Brahmbhatt could only watch as March wickets fell around him and only Andrew Mills (15) made it in to double figures as the visitors were eventually bowled out seven runs short of their target.

The result was the first of many good ones for Wisbech Cricket Club at the weekend.

Wisbech II ended their Hunts League Division Two campaign in style with a two-wicket victory at Perkins on Saturday.

Jordan Trundle put in a starring performance with the ball as he returned 5-23 and, with two-wicket hauls from Lee Peck and Ryan van Waterschoot, Wisbech restricted the home side to 144 all out.

After good scores from openers David Wood (23), Ady Clare (37) and Keith Jakings (31), Wisbech looked to be set for victory.

But a middle order collapse left the result in the balance until tail-ender Paul Strickle (30 not out) pushed Wisbech to victory.

Wisbech II were in big trouble during the early stages of their Fenland Trophy match at home to Warboys on Sunday.

Struggling on 47-6, the home side needed a big innings and it came from Gary Freear, who hit 126 and propelled his team to respectable score of 186.

The Warboys innings lacked such a scorer and another superb bowling performance from Jordan Trundle (3-14) together with support from Ryan van Waterschoot (2-19) and Lyndon Waters (2-22), the visitors were eventually dismissed 41 runs short of their target.
