BOSS Cliff Humphreys believes Wisbech are in a “relegation dogfight” and has urged his players to make themselves available for Saturday’s crucial league clash with Norwich.
Wisbech were hit by a raft of late withdrawals and crashed out of the Senior Vase after a 55-5 third-round defeat away to Old Priorians on Saturday.
The club is facing a five-point deduction because of the Beccles game postponement, leaving them precariously placed in the bottom half of London North-East Division Three.
Humphreys said Saturday’s home game and next weekend’s trip to rivals Cantabs will be vital to their league survival.
He said: “We are in a dogfight but if we can put out the team that won 97-0 only a few weeks ago we will beat Norwich.
“I call upon all Wisbech players to rally behind club skipper Dave Wadsley and make themselves available for these important fixtures.”
Scrum-half Andy Claydon scored Wisbech’s only try in the loss to Old Priorians but Humphreys was philosophical about the defeat.
He said: “It looks to be a humiliating defeat but I have no complaints with the commitment of the 17 players who travelled down to play, all of whom gave it their best shot.
“On the day Old Priorians would have beaten any team at this level.”
