MARCH Town United manager Brett Whaley wants his team to keep their feet on the ground despite producing "their best performance of the season so far".

The outstanding display came in the Hares' 4-1 victory at Gorleston on Saturday - a result that puts March within two points of the top of the Ridgeons First Division.

James Richardson gave March a dream start when he opened the scoring in the first minute.

The game was back in the balance when Gorleston were awarded a contentious penalty but Luke Pepper's spot-kick and a debut goal for 16-year-old Denny Escorcio put the visitors 3-1 up at half-time.

Adam Weston put the icing on the cake with a fourth in the second half and the winning margin could have been greater but for several goal-line clearances from the Gorleston defence.

Whaley said: "Gorleston are one of the best sides we will face all season but we were outstanding and we showed what we are capable of.

"I think that we have played better in other games but we have not maintained that level for 90 minutes.

"We changed the system in midfield because we have been caught out when we have played with out-and-out wingers in the past.

"The team was better balanced in midfield and we were able to force them into errors and catch them on the break.

"The team were excellent but I have to say that Marc Welcher and Denny Escorcio were outstanding.

"Ashley Brand produced the best performance I have seen from him. He didn't score but his workrate was superb and he set up two of the goals."

Despite the victory, Whaley is warning against complacency and believes that his side can still improve.

He said: "There is still a lot more to come from us and we face what could be one of the toughest matches of the season on Saturday so we will have to be back to our best."

March travel to Diss Town tomorrow (Saturday) before returning to the GER for Tuesday evening's home match against Godmanchester Rovers.

Whaley has the luxury of picking the same squad of players for the Diss game but the March manager is also looking for the fans' support.

He said: "I hope that we can attract a big crowd on Tuesday. The fans have been brilliant so far this season and their support is very important to us.
