Chatteris boxing star, Jordan Gill is getting ready to fight Ryan Doyle for the Commonwealth Featherweight Title on Saturday, October 27 at the Copper Box Arena in London.
The Fenland boxer is in high spirits as he prepares for one of the biggest fights of his career to date and believes his next bout will act as a “stepping stone” on his journey to the top.
Gill said: “I’ve been craving a title fight for a long time now. The motivation is there because if I win this fight, I become the Commonwealth Champion, so it puts me up towards world level.
“As an athlete in any sport, you always strive to be at world level. I’ve been training since a young child for almost all my life and it’s all come down to this one moment. This title fight isn’t the end goal; this is just another step on the ladder.”
Gill says Saturday’s fight is the biggest step in his career so far, but is “by no means the end goal. He has had to work hard for this opportunity, waiting patiently for a chance to step up to the mark whilst undergoing a near 18-month absence from the ring.
Extending his unbeaten record, 21-0, won’t be an easy task, but it could be the perfect way to define the progress made not just as a boxer, but as a person too.
Gill added: “Only I will ever know how much I’ve had to put in and how hard I’ve had to dig just to get as far as I’ve got now. Everything has just been a process where I’ve taken everything into my stride and I’ve grown as a person.
“I think sport, especially a brutal sport like boxing, it does make you mentally tough and I think it’s about resilience in general. My fanbase is growing all the time.
“At the same time, I will always have them loyal supporters from Fenland and I think they are so important. I’ve always been a fighter and I’ve not known anything else because I have to do this.”
