Jordan Gill turned in one of his most comprehensive performances to date to defeat Rafael Castillo on Friday night - and the Chatteris fighter is now targeting the English title.
‘The Thrill’ had Castillo down on the canvas twice during their six-round clash in Derby but the Nicaraguan showed terrific spirit to rise on both occasions.
The local featherweight dominated all six rounds, using his superior timing to his advantage to land a flurry of devastating hooks on the experienced Castillo.
To his credit, Castillo absorbed several of Gill’s hardest punches but could do nothing to stop the 23-year-old storming to his 18th straight success.
Gill said: “I thought it was a really good fight and an entertaining one for the fans. Everyone likes to see blood!
“He came in very low with his head and was very dangerous. He had a lot of ambition and was very experienced.
“I’ve learnt a lot and we can move on. It’s a good six rounds in the bank and I’ve now got some very sore hands!
“It’s very surprising that he kept getting up. He’s one of the toughest men I’ve ever been in with.
“I’ve hit him with some very hard and very clean shots but he kept getting up and kept coming; the ambition was there, he was there until the last bell and I take my hat off to him.
“We had a really good crowd, there was a lot of noise and I love it every time. Thank you so much to everyone that came and all my sponsors.”
Gill now has his sights set firmly on clinching his first English title – but standing in his way is Hull-based Samir Mouneimne.
Mouneimne defeated Razaq Najib to win the strap in July and has since been ordered to face Gill before January by the British Boxing Board of Control.
“The English title would be perfect. Samir Mouneimne is the champion so if he wants a fight then let’s get it on,” Gill said.
“I think I would beat him – not only do I think I would I beat him but I’d stop him inside the distance so I’m very confident as always and I hope we can get it on.”
