I HAD a lovely, well deserved lie-in at the weekend because it was the first Sunday in nine months that I hadn't got up to organise a match.Until the weather warms up there will be several more Sunday mornings in bed.One club that doesn't stop for a break is the Mill View Fishing Club. They paid their first visit of the season to Magpie Lake at Pidley and some of the 25 anglers taking part found it hard going. However, Kevin Peacock landed 26 pounds of carp for top spot using a feeder rod and maggot hook bait.Second place went to Des Proud (19-12) who also used maggot hook bait but fished a float rod in favour of the feeder. Pete (the manager) Rayner was third with 14-06 just two ounces ahead of Paul Turner with 14-04 and Alex Bates, fifth with 10 pounds. This weekend, Mill View travel in the opposite direction to Whittlesey to fish one of the lakes on the Decoy Complex. For further information contact the shop.Elsewhere, Ace Angling Club found the going very hard on the Old Lake at Kingsland Reservoir where Richard Button only needed two carp for five pounds to take top spot.Danny Button landed three rudd for one pound to take second place and Andy Lawrence was third with eight ounces, mostly sticklebacks.Anyone looking for a club match on various lakes and reservoirs in the area on Sundays can join Ace Angling Club by contacting Vic Churchman on 01945 464420.On Sunday they are fishing the Two Islands lake on the Dents complex at Hilgay. The draw time is 8.30am with fishing from 9.30am to 3.30pm.Over at Doddington Fields End Water, there are plans for various competitions in the near future on the pool and another Saturday open takes place a week tomorrow, April 1.On April 4 the first senior citizens' open takes place with an 8am draw and the inter-pub series will start shortly after so if there is any pub out there that wishes to enter a team, please contact Viccy or Charlie on 01354 740373.On the Old Lake the carp are feeding steadily and a visiting angler, a Mr Lucas from Royston, has banked 17 carp to 19 pounds while on a short stay and considering the weather, things are looking good there.I've also heard that over at Pidley on the Rookery Farm complex, things are also starting to pick up on the big lake known as Rook. Here, March angler Denis Sanbridge caught small carp on the waggler steadily all day and the odd bigger fish taken on the feeder using red maggot as bait.
