March Town Ladies extended their lead at the top of the Cambs Women’s Championship North table last weekend – but it wasn’t as straightforward as they’d have hoped.
The Hares added a seventh game to their unbeaten run thanks to a 1-0 win over Hungate Rovers, but the side who currently sit second-from-bottom in the standings made Gary Davis’ side work had for their win.
March failed to make a breakthrough early on but did finally take the lead after 20 minutes when Shannon Kelly slotted home after the Hungate ‘keeper turned away a Kayleigh Churchyard drive.
Livvi Hodges hit the crossbar and Jade Pointer was denied a spot-kick as Hungate continued to frustrate March, and the visitors nearly snatched a point at the death but were denied by a fine save from Tori Sharpe.
March’s lead at the league summit now stands at six points, and they will look to extend that next weekend when they host local rivals, Wisbech St Mary (2pm).
