MIDFIELDER Lewis Thompson has signed for March Town United... because he wants to play attractive football.

The former Wisbech Town talent snubbed an approach from Hares boss Paul Crosbie in July, choosing to take up an offer from Ely City instead.

But Thompson, who will make his March debut tomorrow, said he had become frustrated with the Robins’ style of play.

“They play football like Stoke City,” he said. “They just clip it long and get it in the box to see what happens. I didn’t really touch the ball much in the games I played.

“I want to play football the right way and Paul has always said he wants to do that.”

Thompson admitted he was looking forward to working with Crosbie and said he did not mind dropping down from the Thurlow Nunn Premier Division to the First Division.

The 22-year-old said: “March was always in the back of my mind and I just thought going there was the right thing to do.

“Paul was one of the major drawing points because he can help me develop as a player.

“The vibes I’m getting from everyone at the club are good. They seem to be in it for the long haul and I’m ready to commit to that. I want to help March as much as I can.”

Crosbie said: “I wasn’t looking to add to my squad but when somebody like Lewis comes along you don’t say no.

“We’ve got quite a lot of young lads and hopefully he can be someone to look up to. He also has the ability to change a game just with his own performance.”

Robbie Masters’ late goal failed to prevent March from crashing out of the FA Vase on Saturday with a 2-1 defeat to Thrapston Town at the GER.

Thompson made 173 appearances and scored 17 goals for Wisbech - his boyhood club.

He will line up for the Hares tomorrow when they travel to Braintree Town Reserves but Stu Anderson, Sean White, Stu Porter, Ben Collett and Aaron Bailey will all be missing.
