Manager Alex Kaufman admitted individual errors cost Chatteris Town as they fell to a second Cambridgeshire County League defeat of the season.

The Lilies were beaten 3-2 at fellow Kershaw Senior A Division promotion contenders Gamlingay.

They were stung by a late winner from their hosts after earlier hitting the front through a fortunately-awarded Gary Smith penalty and equalising courtesy of a Jermaine Watson strike.

“It was a learning curve for us,” said Kaufman. “Our opponents were direct all game and we must adapt physically when teams playing that way against us.

“The match had a draw written all over it, but individual errors cost us at the wrong moments and a side like Gamlingay are always going to punish those.”

Ben Matthews went straight into the Chatteris team after his return from March Town was announced the previous evening.

The Lilies have also completed the dual-registration signing of another former West Street favourite, Jack Saunders.

He will continue to play for Yaxley in Southern League Division One Central but will turn out for Chatteris when not required by that club.

Kaufman added: “I’m delighted to have two players back at the club who add huge quality and experience to the squad.

“We’re looking strong in all areas and it’s important to have this type of lads who want to push forwards with their football.

“They are professional but great characters in the dressing room as well. It also means that competition for places is really hotting up.”
