Chatteris Town boss Ashley Taylor says he is relieved to see his defence at the top of their game again.

The Lilies claimed their second straight clean sheet thanks to a 2-0 Kershaw Premier Division win at Gamlingay United on Saturday, and Taylor admitted he was pleased to see his side shut out their opponents after a nightmare start which saw them lose both their opening games without scoring a goal.

“It was a good team performance on Saturday,” Taylor said.

“We controlled the game and stood up to a physical, direct team on a small pitch. To get back to clean sheets in also very pleasing.”

Ben Matthews and 17-year-old Adam Parmenter found the net for Taylor’s men in Saturday’s clash, but the performance of their new signing, winger Ben Amery, caught Taylor’s eye.

“Ben fitted in really well and set up both goals,” he said. “Adam (Parmenter) also had a good game and it was pleasing to see him score his first goal for the club.”

Next up for Chatteris is a trip to Comberton United on Saturday afternoon (3pm) – the first of six back-to-back away games for Chatteris; a bizarre run of fixtures which spans until the middle of October.

Comberton have drawn three of their four league games so far, but claimed their first win on Tuesday evening over Sawston Rovers.

“I don’t know a lot about Comberton but I watched them on Tuesday which allows me to be more prepared for Saturday’s game,” Taylor admitted.

“We now have six more away games in the league which is madness but we have to deal with this.”

The Lilies’ reserves warmed up for their Cambs League opener with an impressive victory this week.

Chatteris, now managed by Clive Rayner, hammered local rivals Manea United 5-0 on Tuesday, courtesy of braces from Ashley Blanchflower and Will Grant and a strike from Josh Brittin at West Street.

The Lilies second-string host Hemingfords United Reserves in their first MPG 1B fixture on September 9.
