MARCH Town Hockey Club stalwart Nick King has prepared for the new East League season by winning the National Masters competition with the East of England select side this summer.

The 57-year-old right-winger scored five goals for the team which contained players between the ages of 55 and 59 and hopes for more success with March once their season begins on September 25.

“It was a great competition and it was brilliant for me to play against the best players in my age range to see how I would compete,” he said.

“It was a great experience and it’s made me determined to play to the best standard that I can for March in the coming season.”

Hockey is not King’s only sporting love as he regularly takes part in triathlon competitions around the country with his son Doug.

March’s chairman Neil Liversedge said: “Nick has always been a great competitor and a fantastic example to our younger players who love playing with him.

“He’s unbelievably quick, has a fitness level that embarrasses most of us and still takes pride in winning the personal battles he has with opposing players who mark him on a Saturday afternoon.

“The club couldn’t be more delighted with his success.”
