MARCH finished their season on a high after securing a 22-run win over fierce rivals Wisbech on Saturday.

A mixed season in the Tucker Gardener Division saw March miss out on a promotion push despite a strong start to the year but they added some gloss to their summer by defeating Wisbech in some style at the weekend.

March finished the season in fourth place, just three points behind Wisbech in third, but a whopping 66 points behind league champions Foxton.

The home side lost opener David Hodson for a duck as Wisbech’s Jack Hastings struck early but some resolute batting from Andrew Mills (32) and Ryan Meyer (77) ensured there were plenty of runs on the board at the top of the order.

Paceman Craig Johnson (2-54) took a couple of quick wickets to stem the flow of runs, with Hastings (1-26) also bowling well.

Tommy Howgego scored an undefeated 26 towards the end of the innings to boost March on to 187-6 at the close, with support late in the day from Ben Pyle (16) and Matthew Vail (14).

Wisbech’s reply got off to a superb start as opener Simon Freear hit 84 runs, while number three James Williams managed a tidy half-century to put Wisbech in control.

March’s Tyler Phillips switched the momentum of the match however, with three quick wickets that brought two new batsmen to the crease, exposing them to a re-invigorated bowling attack.

Ryan Meyer helped himself to 3-38 from 13 frugal overs, while Phillips went on to pick up another wicket to bring his tally for the innings to four, at a cost of just 38 runs.

Only David Wood (8) managed to make more than five runs for the visitors as they collapsed to 165 all out, with some four ducks from the final seven batsmen.

Stuart Mills (1-40) picked up the last wicket of the innings for a triumphant March side.
