Manager Mel Mattless admits March Town need to be more ruthless in front of goal - and he hopes the return of a homegrown prospect can make that happen.

The Hares wasted a host of good chances when slipping to a 1-0 home Thurlow Nunn League First Division defeat at the hands of King’s Lynn Reserves on Monday.

It’s an issue Matttless has moved to address by bringing Toby Allen back to the club following a spell at Cambs League side Outwell Swifts.

Allen, who is the captain of the Hares’ Under 18 team, has scored 10 times in 13 appearances for Swifts, who play one level below March in the Kershaw Premier Division.

Mattless said: “We let a lot of really good chances go begging on Monday and that’s not something we can afford to do.

“They have been coming at crucial times in games as well. We should probably have scored twice in the opening 10 minutes against Lynn and that would have put us in a great position.

“Instead we ended up falling behind and could not get ourselves back on level terms despite having more good opportunities in the second half.

“I’ve decided to bring Toby in after having him highly recommended to me by a lot of people at the club.

“He went to Outwell as they offered him the chance to play regularly and he has been scoring plenty of goals in the Cambs League.

“Hopefully he will come back to March full of confidence and can continue that sort of form.”

Allen returns ahead of a trip to AFC Sudbury Reserves tomorrow. March will be attempting to complete a double over the Suffolk side after a 2-0 success at the GER in early November - Mattless’ first triumph after replacing Chris Bartlett as boss.

Mattless has a selection headache tomorrow with both Conyard brothers - Rob (broken hand) and Adam (hamstring) - and Luke Whyatt (groin) all picking up injuries against King’s Lynn Reserves on Monday.

The club have also lost the services of Sean White for the rest of the season as he has gone travelling in Australia.

March currently sit 16th in the First Division table, but they have a tough January ahead.

They face the current top three - Coggeshall, Diss and Stowmarket - during the rest of this month.
