MARCH Town United chairman Phil White has stepped into the vacant reserves managerial role until the end of the season.

White, who has been Hares’ chairman for three years, has replaced Steve Wilson who only returned to the club in the summer. He is relishing the opportunity to help first team boss Jamie Weston drive the club’s playing fortunes forward.

He said: “I love putting the tracksuit on even if I’m not in Jamie or Steve’s class.

“I’m always excited about this club and I’m so passionate about football and March Town United. I have done it before and I enjoy it.

“I know a lot of players and I’ll be going out there to bring some of those in to bolster the club’s chances of both sides getting promoted this year.

“I always believed that Jamie and Steve were the best team we could have had but for now I will still be chairman and take the reigns until the end of the season. It saves us chopping and changing things during the season.”

White moved quickly to re-sign his son Lee from Chatteris Town and was immediately rewarded as he scored in Saturday’s 2-1 win at Haddenham Rovers.

The football fanatic praised fellow board members for making his decision to step back into the managerial limelight so easy.

“I’m not concerned about doing both jobs because being chairman is a doddle,” said White.

“The board work their socks off and never get the praise they deserve. Gerry Roe (vice-chairman) takes so much pressure off me because I’m the one with the mouth and he does all the hard work.”

Players Scott Welcher (Afghanistan) and Harry Roe (London) have joined Steve Wilson in moving away from the area and White thanked them for their services.

The first team continued their resurgence with a fine 4-0 victory at Fakenham on Saturday before beating Royston Town on penalties in Tuesday night’s Cambs Invitation Cup encounter.

Manager Jamie Weston praised the influence of new Brazilian striker Juliano De Gomes Menezes and admitted White’s decision was the right one to take the club forward.

Weston said: “I’ve worked with Phil before on the managerial side of things so it will be the best transition for the club. Players like playing for him.

“Juliano has been excellent and our confidence is growing. He’s holding the ball up and the players know if they give him the ball they’re going to get it back.”
