March Town won their second Tucker Gardner Premier Division game on the trot when they beat Sawston on Saturday following a winless streak that stretched right back to July 2013.

Batting second, March chased down Sawston’s 197 for six with Steve Seymour scoring a marvellous 117 not out in their reply. But it wasn’t all plain sailing for the team with the captain desperate to prove the previous week’s win wasn’t a one off.

“At 30 for five or so we were making hard work of it,” said the captain Chris Ringham. “But Steve dug out of a massive hole and it was great to win a game at home.

“It meant it kept some of the old guard off my back in the bar,” he joked. “It was good for Steve to do that in from of the home supporters.”

Next on the fixture list for March are Foxton & Babraham who have blown hot and cold so far in their first four games. They sit one place above March in the table with just two more points.

Wisbech Town’s start to the new season continued to be disappointing on Saturday when the captain Alan Burton and fellow opener Danny Haynes hit 186 runs between them only for the game at Histon to end in a draw.

Burton scored 71 while Haynes was five short of 100 when he was run out for the seventh wicket. Sam Albutt (12) and Simon Freear (12) were the only other batsmen to break into double figures. James Williams took four wickets for 33 but Histon lasted out their full quota of overs and took a share of the points with a score of 146 for nine.

In Division One of the Cambs Senior League, March Town II’s bowlers did their bit to restrict Great Shelford to 174 to eight before the team failed in their chase at 128 all out.

James Fountain took three wickets for 15 runs while James Beresford chipped in with another three for 58.

Chatteris’s game at Cambridge St Giles was a victim of the wet weather while Wisbech Town II in Division Two were supposed to play Cambridge NCI II but that game was also called off.
