MARCH Town United chairman Gary Wesley has revealed that the club will appoint a new manager within a week of a crucial board meeting that convenes on Tuesday.

He has also revealed to the Cambs Times that he is impressed with the quality of the applications he has received so far.

He said: "We have had five applications and spoken to other people who have expressed an interest. I am extremely pleased with the quality of the candidates and there are some who have very good coaching qualifications."

Speculation on those who are in the frame for the job is rife. Wesley said: "Some of the people that have been linked with the job haven't even applied.

"The situation is that we will assess each and every application carefully during our meeting on Tuesday. It is unlikely that we will make an immediate decision but we will certainly be closer to knowing who that person is.

"We want to appoint someone as soon as possible but we don't want to distract the players while they are still involved in league matches."

Wesley is also adamant that the club needs a partnership at the helm of the club. He said: "To expect one person to manage the team is unfair.

"We will certainly be looking for two people to act as manager and coach."

The new management team will have the opportunity to take the Hares forward and improve on this season's disappointment.

They now face the prospect of finishing bottom of the Ridgeons First Division with only one match remaining.

The Hares were outclassed in their final home match of the season on Saturday and lost 3-1 to Whitton United.

The visitors led 2-0 before Scott Welcher reduced the arrears but Whitton broke to kill off the game with a third. Wesley admitted that his side were second best, saying: "They had two quality strikers and they fully deserved to win the game."

The trip to Haverhill Rovers tomorrow (Saturday) will be a tough one but the March chairman is eager to get a result.

Wesley said: "We will go out to do the best we can and stop Haverhill's promotion charge. We are not going to lie down for anyone and we have to be as professional as possible."

* MARCH Rangers Ladies have won the Fenland Ladies League Cup final after a thrilling 2-1 victory over Downham Town on Sunday.

A large crowd at the GER were treated to a closely-fought game and after an even start, Kim Tomlinson put March ahead with a quick turn and low shot.

March had their chances to extend their lead but Downham levelled the scores with a goal before the break.

Rangers were thwarted by good saves from the visiting keeper but home pressure finally told 15 minutes from time when Tomlinson set up Shereen Hutton who tucked the ball into the bottom corner to win the match.

Player of the match was Kelly Cutler.
