March Town manager Mel Mattless is delighted with his side’s start to the Thurlow Nunn League First Division season.

A 1-1 draw against Leiston Reserves last Saturday stretched the Hares’ unbeaten run to three matches since an opening day defeat at the hands of Holland FC.

March have picked up five points in total from their opening four matches in Mattless’ first full season at the helm.

The Hares chief is not just pleased with results so far - he has also been mightily impressed with their performances as well.

“It’s been a very promising start to the season,” said Mattless.

“We’ve played well in all four games, including the defeat on the opening day, and I’m very encouraged by what I’ve seen.

“New signings have settled in very well and we’re playing some really good football.

“We’re very much a work in progress, but the signs so far are good.

“We also have competition for places as well which is something we didn’t have last season.”

March drew 1-1 with Leiston Reserves at the GER last Saturday.

Youngster Toby Allen fired the Hares ahead in the opening half with his second goal of the campaign.

The Under 18 ace initially stepped into the first-team squad as a midfielder last season, but is now impressing in an attacking role.

March saw their advantage wiped out four minutes into the second period and had David Jackson dismissed for collecting a second caution late on.

Mattless added: “Toby came into the first-team squad last season and is really finding his feet in senior football.

“He’s only 17 and is scoring goals for us and the Under 18s. He is one of plenty of players who can chip in with goals.

“It was a decent point against Leiston, but a game we could have won. We missed a few chances in the first half and then fell into a few bad habits of going a bit too direct after they equalised.

“The boys all know we need to be a bit more clinical and that’s something we’re working on.”

Assistant boss Roy Brand in charge of March for the next three games with Mattless away.

The first of those is at home to unbeaten Debenham LC tomorrow (3pm).
