March Town saved their best until lest by snatching a super point in their final home game of the Thurlow Nunn League First Division season.

Max Mattless hit a stunning last-gasp leveller for the 10-man Hares against table-topping Stowmarket at the GER Ground last Saturday.

It was a strike which provided reward for a super March showing and also prevented the visitors from clinching the title.

“It was undoubtedly our best team performance since I’ve been in charge,” said delighted boss Mel Mattless. “Everyone dug in and gave everything they had.

“It proves we’re capable of competing with the top teams at our level – the next challenge is to produce performances like that on a regular basis.”

Neither side could break through in a goalless first half, but March’s task became considerably tougher on the hour when right-back Jack McLoughlin was sent off for collecting a second caution.

Stowmarket then hit the front with a quarter-of-an-hour to go, but skipper Mattless provided a dramatic response after good work from David Abbott and Dayne Moore – and became the club’s leading scorer in the process.

The Hares now look to finish the campaign on a high at third-bottom Needham Market Reserves on Saturday (3pm).

March cannot finish higher than 16th, but they could drop two places if results go against them on the final day.

Mattless added: “It was a terrific point in our final home game and now we can hopefully sign off on a high with a win at Needham Market Reserves.

“Their first-team’s season is over so we may run into some better players, but we’ll go there confident we can get a result.

“Then it will be a case of starting the hard work of putting a squad together for next season.

“We’ve got some very promising young players at the club and it has been excellent to bring several of them through into the first-team squad.

“That’s something we’ll look to continue to do, but hopefully we can add two or three older heads to give us more experience.”
