March Town recorded the biggest win of manager Mel Mattless’ reign last Saturday – and it arrived courtesy of one of their best performances of his time in charge.

Mattless, who succeeded Chris Bartlett in the Hares’ hotseat, was thrilled with a 4-0 success against Dereham Town Reserves in the Thurlow Nunn League First Division.

“It was a good day at the office,” said Mattless. “The performance was excellent and the result was very pleasing.

“We’ve been in control of games previously and not quite turned it into a full 90-minute display, but we were very good from start to finish.”

Boss’ son Max Mattless made the breakthrough at the GER with a header from a corner midway through the first half. Only a fine save and a goal-line clearance prevented him from claiming a hat-trick of almost carbon-copy goals.

Teenager Toby Allen doubled the lead on the stroke of half-time and March continued to boss matters in the second period.

Jack Brand added a third goal before Rob Conyard climbed off the bench to complete the scoring, but that could prove to be his final contribution of the campaign.

The highly-rated frontman picked up an ankle injury in a youth cup final the following day and could now miss the rest of the season.

Three of March’s remaining four games are against other side in the bottom half of the table.

Two of those fall over the Easter weekend with a trip to Cornard United on Saturday being followed by a home Monday date against Downham Town Reserves.

“We need one more win to get to 10 and we need five points to reach 40,” added Mattless.

“They are the targets for the remainder of the season.”

Mattless is short of players this weekend as Allen and Charlie Revell are both away, and Lewis Thompson has work commitments.

• March Town Reserves clinched promotion last Saturday.

A Dayne Moore double earned a 2-1 win at Eaton Socon Reserves to clinch second spot in Division 1B of the Cambs League.

They will play at Kershaw Senior B Division level next season, only two steps below the club’s first team.
