There is reason to be cheerful at Whittlesey Athletic, according to Reserves boss Max Flintoft.

It’s safe to say it has been a tumultuous season at the club, which was forced to fold its first team due to financial issues, but Flintoft says that his side – and the club’s A team – are more than worthy of keeping the club’s legacy alive.

“There are lots of positives to look at for the club,” he said.

“We have a Cambs Junior Cup final to look forward to, along with another semi-final. The A-team are doing well in their league and fighting for the title.”

Flintoft’s men continued their fine recent PDFL First Division form – which has seen them win their last 13 matches - last weekend with a 3-1 success over Stamford Belvedere.

Whittlesey overturned a half-time deficit to record yet another success, with goals coming from Jack Flintoft, Kev Gilbert and Kyle Sansom, and Flintoft admitted his side found it difficult to get going in the first half of the fixture.

“We never got going in the first half and failed to have any end product,” he said.

“We spoke at half time about not throwing away everything we have worked for to get those 12 wins in a row and we came out in the second half much better.

“We were patient and started to play good football and getting the three points was very pleasing considering the start we made.”

Whittlesey make the short trip across the Fens tomorrow to face Sutton Bridge, and Flintoft has set his sights on extending Athletic’s run to 14 matches and closing the gap on the division’s top three.

“The boys are determined to carry our run on and our hard work is certainly paying off,” he said.

“Hopefully we can continue this at Sutton Bridge.”
