FENLAND swimming sensation Liam Knight tore up the record book to claim a stunning eight gold medals in the East Region Youth Championships at the weekend.

The Wisbech star finished as the most successful swimmer in the entire championships, bagging eight golds and one silver at the event in Norwich.

Knight, who competes for the City of Peterborough Swimming Club, smashed six county records and four championship records to dominate the 15/16 year-old age category.

The 16-year-old took part in 19 events across two days - sealing an inspiring display by beating the 100m Butterfly county record by an incredble three seconds.

Knight, the first winner in the Fenland Sports Stars of the Future campaign, paid tribute to his physio David Jakeman.

The teenager also thanked Fenland District Council for the free use of all their leisure facilities - his prize for being named a winner in the campaign run by the council in conjunction with The Cambs Times/Wisbech Standard.
