A YOUNG March Bears side lost their opening home game of the season, as Cantabrigans 2nds romped to a 22-7 victory at Elm Road on Saturday.

The Bears faced an uphill battle with a depleted side, and were put under constant pressure in the first half, conceding two tries.

Half time words from the coaches appeared to lift the Bears, who began the second half strongly. Jon Aspinwall, who was harshly sin-binned late in the first half, returned to the field to put in some big tackles and the backs began to combine to put the Cantabs defence under some pressure.

The Bears were rewarded for their hard work when veteran Jamie Kerse touched down for a well earned team effort try. Matty Day slotted the conversion to make the score 14-7.

From this moment Cantabs raised their game, and after long spells camped in the Bears’ half, they scored their third try of the match. A converted penalty was also added to make the final score 22-7.

After the game, March skipper Aaron Boxall praised the drive and commitment of his players.

Club president Barry Feetham said: “It was a great performance on Saturday from March Bears, but we still need a few more players to increase and strengthen our playing squad.”

The Bears hold training every Thursday evening at the Elm Road Sports Field, starting at 7pm. Players of all ages and abilities are welcome.
