SKATERS from Roller Village Skating Academy in Walpole Highway won five medals at their first National Open Club tournament.

Nine youngsters, aged 7-13, competed in eight of the 30 events against competitors from all over the UK. Isha Benefer picked up a silver medal in the Newcomers Dance category while Michael King and Samantha Calver claimed second place in the Dance Couple’s event.

Chiara Moore collected two Bronze medals coming third in both the Free Skating and Novelty Dance categories.

Delighted Head Coach Ashley Moore said: “To pick up five medals at the first attempt in a national open event for a new club is unheard of.

“We are extremely proud of all of the children who competed. They were a credit to the club and the local community.”

Melissa Jones (4th), Chantel Lyons (5th), Shana Beckett (7th), Jason Gay (8th) and Stephanie Jones (11th) also excelled in a competition that included some of the most experienced skaters in the country.

The Academy is still hoping to raise funds for kit and equipment at the Roller Village Fete and Fun Day on Saturday August 14.
