IMPROVED weather meant improved fishing at the weekend and this was certainly true for Steve Smalley, who returned 15 carp and a whopping 120lb when Mill View Angling Club visited Drayton Reservoir, near Northampton.

Mill View will be at Pidley to fish the Magpie Lake on Sunday and the draw will be at 8.30am.

Manea Angling Club were also on their travels at the weekend, but with clear waters and little movement on the Ouse, at Ely, things didn't look good. However, Kev Bridgement still needed 8-15 of skimmers to take top spot.

The Manea boys will be back at Welches Dam, on the River Delph, at the weekend.

The Twenty Foot, at Sheppersons Bridge has been fishing well and Wimblington Angling Club were there on Sunday.

A misty start and some colour in the water made things promising and I found the conditions perfect. I fished caster on the hook over groundbait for three hours and hooked one tench and six hand-sized skimmers for about 8lb.

I then switched to my hemp line and caught a good roach to help win the match with 14-08.

The Wimblington club will be fishing the second round of their match against Potters Group Angling Club on the Ouse, at Ely, on Sunday. Wimblington are leading this match and the draw is at 7am.

The Pool, at Fields End Water, Doddington, fished well on Saturday when Gordon Whitwell netted 93-10 to win the Black Bull's Angling Club match. Gordon fished paste all day at nine metres and fed loose trout pellet.

On Sunday, Leverington Angling Club fished the Pool but the fish were less hungry and teenager Sid Wells took the honours with 43-02.

The Old Lake is also doing well, with plenty of double-figure carp to be caught on the top using dog biscuit or bread.

And at Kingsland, the tench are feeding well on the Silver Fish lake, where a lot are being caught on worm, and the Big Lake is also producing carp.

On the rivers, the Old Nene, through March, is still in good form and on Saturday, Paul Ringham landed a small carp while Jonny Bird and Shaun Strachan netted several good-size bream.

A good day out can be had on the Trent, around Nottingham, where barbel can be caught at Clifton Grove and Gunthorpe Weir.

Finally, a junior match takes place on the Pool, on Sunday. There are two age groups of competition and still a few places available. Anyone interested should call Viccy on 01354 740373.
