SWIMMING ace Liam Knight bagged six gold medals at the ASA Central Zone Meet... despite carrying a knee injury.

The 18-year-old, from Wisbech, was forced to pull out of the 100m breaststroke and the 400m individual medley after suffering knee ligament damage.

But he triumphed in all six of his remaining disciplines in the over-17 section - even clocking a British Championships qualifying time in the 50m butterfly.

Knight said: “I had two weeks out with no kick training but now the knee feels fine.

“Since I’ve had my injury I’ve been really down. I’ve been worried that I wouldn’t be able to get back to form so I was delighted that the weekend went well.”

Knight’s haul included victories in the 50m backstroke, 100m backstroke, 200m backstroke, 50m butterfly, 100m butterfly and 200m individual medley.

Sports therapist David Jakeman and physio Nigel Tarratt helped the teenager recover in time for the meet, which was held in Corby.

Knight received more good news this week as he was accepted to train at the British Swimming Intensive Training Centre at Loughborough as a visiting athlete.

The weekly sessions will see him train alongside Great Britain stars such as Elizabeth Simmonds, Fran Halsall and his role model Liam Tancock.

“It’s like a trial run to see if I want to go to Loughborough full time next year,” said Knight. “It’s a good chance to get a feel for it.

“I’m just a little bit excited about training with Liam Tancock!”
