WITH March League players invited to the Wisbech Championships for the first time, more than 60 took part in the competition held at Marshland High School.Players competed in doubles and singles matches across four age divisions from under-12 to under-18s.Matthew Pack won the under-12 singles after defeating the seeded Nat Butcher in the semi-finals and Luke Stacey in the final. Nat was also a winner in the under-12 doubles final, where together with brother, Alex, to recorded a fairly comfortable win over March players, Martin Bulbrook and Luke Stacey. The under-14 singles title went to defending champion Grant Brightey who beat March's Marti Pentney in a close five-end final.Grant also took the under-16 singles title after recording a comfortable three-set win in the final.There was another exciting match in the under-14 doubles final when brothers, Matthew and Nicholas Pack, from Marshland High, beat Niall Harris and Jack Hinson, from March, in five ends. Marti Pentney celebrated success in the under-16 doubles final where Pentney and partner Luke Barron beat Niall Harris and Jack Hinson. Both the under-18 events were dominated by Chad Bassett who took the titles in the finals without dropping an end.He beat Will Stead in the singles before partnering Alex Goodwin to win the doubles final against Tim Wager and Alec Frusher. The presentation of trophies will be made at the Wisbech and District Table Tennis Association presentation night on Friday, April 21 at the Walton Highway Sports and Social Club.
