The familiar story of Saturday struggles and Sunday successes continued for March Town last weekend.

The club again found the going tough in their return to the Cambs & Hunts Premier League top-flight when going down by 89 runs at table-toppers Ketton.

March restricted the leaders to 172-9 in the Whiting & Partners Division One clash as Sam Clarke and skipper Tyler Phillips claimed three wickets apiece, but they could only manage 83 with the bat.

Tail-ender Clarke was response for 24 of those runs, while Brandon Phillips (10) was the only other March man to reach double-figures.

The latest loss leaves them a point above the drop-zone ahead of a crucial clash at home to another struggling side, Eaton Socon, tomorrow (12.30pm).

But there are no such troubles for the club’s Sunday first-team, who strengthened their position at the summit of Rutland League Division Two by triumphing in a top-of-the-table clash.

Brandon Phillips hit an unbeaten 55 in a three-wicket victory against Weldon, who were dismissed for just 124 with Shaz Akhtar and Steve Coe both bagging three wickets.

The club’s Sunday 2nds also extended their unbeaten run in the Fenland Trophy with a nine-wicket drubbing of Khalsa at The Avenue.

Curtis Oldroyd and Rob Conyard hit unbeaten half-centuries as the March side cruised past the visitors’ posting of 162.

Elsewhere last Saturday, March 2nds suffered a batting collapse in a four-wicket Cambs Senior League defeat against Cambourne.

Opener Steve Hinson hit a smart 65, but his side crumbled from 106-1 to be dismissed for 140 in the Division Two match at The Avenue. The second-placed visitors eased to victory despite 4-45 from spinner Richard Green.

March 3rds came up agonisingly short in their Cambs Junior League Division Three North clash against Milton 2nds. Doug Furlong cracked 78 and Adrian Bussey hit 53 as they reached 224 in pursuit of their hosts’ offering of 227-5.

But there was derby delight for March 4ths as they saw off Wimblington by three wickets in Division Five North. James Mortlock smashed 74 and Shae Pooley added a valuable 39 as they eased past Wimblington’s tally of 176.
